Share: ApperniceJune 03, 2022 End-of-Year Blitz Interview with our Founder and CEO, Mr. Valcho Stoyanov What are the most significant achievements of INDEAVR for 2021? We kept our most important people. All of them. Despite the significantly increased demand, we managed to serve all our clients and deliver everything that we promised. ? We remained true to ourselves and our principles. We believe more than ever that this is the only way to be successful, no matter what it costs us. ? We have attracted a lot of new talented people who I believe will inspire the development of INDEAVR for the next 10 years. What did the pandemic 2020/ 2021 give you personally? ? I have established “close relationships” with many more people in the company than I could have before. It turned out that in a virtual environment I can talk to more colleagues, the conversations are more honest, timely and rich. ? More focus time and more time for strategizing. ? I had the time to convey many more messages to everyone in the company. ? I had time to be alone with myself. I haven’t had that time in 15 years. As experts say, being alone with oneself can improve creativity and confidence, so that you can better deal with adverse situations. What do you think about the virtual work environment? What about the hybrid work model? ? The virtual way of working was known for years mainly to the large global organizations. Today, this has become a reality for every organization. Anyone who does not accept and does not adapt to this change will lose a lot. ? The work from home / office will be different now. Perhaps more for companies like ours, less for other companies, but each organization will have to find its way, sooner rather than later. What would you like to say to INDEAVR clients in such period of reckoning and planning? ? To not stop believing in us. To not hesitate to challenge us, because they are about to see the best of us. ? Our plans are for decades to come and we put a lot of energy and resources to stay ahead of the game. What would you like to say to the INDEAVR employees? ? Do not stop believing in yourselves. ? Do not stop giving all of yourselves and require others in the company to do so. ? Do not stop supporting each other. ? That every day is a pleasure for me to work with them. Even on days when nothing is going well. What challenged you the most in 2021? ? We had to grow our team by 50%. I don’t like fast growth as you risk losing focus on the important things at hand. ? Nothing else. I work with smart, skilled, and hardworking people. We had challenging moments, but at such times the huge potential and talent in the company unfolds. Things just happen because our people are capable and willing to invest all their energy in solving the challenges. What do you dream about in the future? ? For inspired clients who demand a lot from us. If we continue to have that, everything else will be fine. What are your priorities for 2022? ? Our people and their well-being. Share: MentorshipJune 03, 2022 Mentorship is a beneficial relationship for both sides How long have you worked at INDEAVR, and what is your specific job function? I have been working at INDEAVR as a Software Developer for more than three years now and I’ve had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects. I’ve been engaged in the creation of both internal and external applications, as well as the development and oversight of integrations between them. And since the creation of our new Mentoring Program, I am also happy to aid new hires in their own professional growth. It seems like you’re really getting satisfaction from your job. Is there anything else that attracted you towards INDEAVR? Something that really drew me to INDEAVR was the breadth of projects I’d get to be a part of. The variety of technologies used, the different requirements and landscapes of each project made me confident that I could freely develop myself professionally without risk of getting stuck with a soon-to-be-obsolete skillset. Moreover, the effort on the side of the company to assist new hires in their professional growth via trainings and certifications played a major part in my decision to join. What is your experience in mentorship and why do you think it’s so important? When I started working at INDEAVR I had the opportunity to learn from colleagues who were well-versed programmers with the patience and dedication to help and teach. Having such people to rely on when starting a job, especially my first one, proved crucial in allowing me to thrive in a new environment. Now, I am very proud to be a mentor and to have the ability to help new colleagues with the challenges they face, as well as learn from them. It is a beneficial relationship for both sides, as it brings fresh ideas to the table and facilitates mutual growth. In your opinion what do you think it takes for somebody to be a success at INDEAVR? Flexibility and proactivity. This combination has certainly proven itself to be the hallmark of successful employees here. Given the rapidly changing field we’re working in, and in particular in light of the wide scope of projects our company is engaged in, flexibility is an invaluable skill for an ambitious developer. Proactivity is another important quality that is valued highly here. Our loosely hierarchical company structure helps avoid the bane of micromanagement – instead, we are encouraged to voice our ideas and experiment with new technology and ways of doing things. What advice would you give to somebody who wanted to join INDEAVR? Teamwork and the willingness to learn are paramount here. While the environment offers a multifaceted approach to enhancing learning and professional development (by way of the mentorship program, paid certification exams and training, personal R&D hours), it cannot work without a willingness to learn and improve on the part of the employee as well. Share: DevOps SecurityJune 03, 2022 Picking the brain of a DevOps professional DevOps is one of the modern buzzwords in tech right now. More and more companies are switching to DevOps as it has become a common transformative journey in the IT world. We have asked one of the most experienced engineers at INDEAVR a few questions regarding the DevOps philosophy. Why we need DevOps? Aren’t we flexible enough by applying Agile? DevOps is a culture that allows the development and the operations team to work together and deliver services faster and in a more efficient manner. It’s a challenging field, which requires continuous development, testing, integration, deployment, and monitoring of the software throughout the lifecycle. Agile is a methodology for software development that addresses gaps and conflicts between the customer’s expectations and the developers’ understanding of those expectations. The focus here is on iterative, incremental, and rapid releases of software, followed by customer feedback. A phased approach to continuous delivery is not only preferable, it’s infinitely more manageable. Maurice Kherlakian Are there any business benefits after adopting the DevOps way of working? Yes, there are a lot of business benefits of DevOps for different stakeholders – for IT managers, it is important that the procedural and technological metrics are improved: better software performance, lower cost of investment and a release, lower volume of defects. From the lens of a CIO, DevOps offers reliable and faster fixes, along with enhanced operational support, greater flexibility, adaptability, and freedom to experiment. The advantages of DevOps as per the corporate vision of a CEO include reliable and stable IT infrastructure, lower downtime, and improvement in productivity of the organization. Digital Cloud Data Software-Engineering Could you share some lessons learnt / recommendations based on your professional experience? Rushing to make changes is not a viable option. The transition to DevOps does not happen overnight. Do not expect the infrastructure to be managed by code at once. Do not attempt to automate everything at once. Make sure the tools of automation chosen are compatible and integrated with each other and ensure smooth operation and management of configuration. And draw your attention to enhancing security – negligence in the field of security can make the DevOps transformation ineffective. What about the collaboration with the other teams? Traditionally, Development and Operations teams have different priorities and that’s why team play is a very important part of DevOps. The changes can be large or small depending on the business needs but with so many moving parts, it’s essential that all sides stay in sync to enable project success. Communication and collaboration are some of the most crucial skills for a DevOps professional, as they should be able to define a clear and easy to understand roadmap. This is crucial in order to get everyone on the same page and help them achieve the final objectives. Author Dilyan Genov Employee
Share: DataJune 03, 2022 The mindset of a Data Engineer Radoslav is a Bachelor of Science from the University of Mannheim, Germany. In 2017 he decided to join INDEAVR team as a Data Analyst. His strong motivation helped him quickly climbing to the position of Data Engineer, and today in his role as Senior Data Engineer he is one of the most experienced in his team. Recently, for some projects he also is in the role of Solutions Architect. He has helped with the realization of many projects and has solved many difficult tasks. Enjoy reading the answers of his five questions! 1. Who can become a data engineer? Data Engineering isn’t something that a lot of people aspire to. As a kid you don’t dream of one day becoming a data engineer. Rather, you find yourself invariably working with data to some capacity and you start to enjoy it. Maybe you love seeking out patterns and love seeing these patterns automated. Perhaps you hate repeating yourself and prefer to reuse what you’ve already achieved elsewhere. Maybe you are fascinated with the latest and latest technologies and would love to use them in your own work. If these situations resonate with you, then you already have the right mindset to be a data engineer. What’s left is to get to know what technology we use and to start tackling the problems we face. 2. How long have you worked at INDEAVR? I started working at INDEAVR almost five years ago analyzing basic data using SQL and R. Gradually the work shifted to implementing, improving and finally designing ever more complex data manipulation pipelines, while Python became the de-facto language of choice due to its simplicity combined with the massive open-source ecosystem surrounding it. We have deployed projects both in clients’ on-premises infrastructure and in the cloud. As my experience has grown, I have taken up the effort to gather, combine and document our department’s collective knowledge and make it accessible to colleagues both junior and senior. 3. What attracted you towards INDEAVR? What initially drew me to INDEAVR was the fact that we work with multiple clients on projects rather than having an array of our own products the way many other tech companies do. Because of this the work itself is immensely diverse, and I can experience totally different technologies and challenges. The more I worked at INDEAVR though, the more I realized that what makes the company unique is the great level of autonomy and freedom that each employee has – the teams are small and organize their work themselves. Additionally, the company is always open to new ideas, technologies and workflows. 4. In your opinion what do you think it takes for somebody to be a success at INDEAVR? In order to really excel at INDEAVR you must make full use of the autonomy and opportunities that the company provides – strive to always do better, to improve any deficiencies in yourself, your work, or your team. You should never be content with just completing tasks, but rather always seek out new ways, better ways to solve your clients’ problems and provide value above and beyond what anyone expects from you. 5. What advice would you give to somebody who wanted to join INDEAVR? Never be afraid to ask questions, to turn to your colleagues or mentors — no matter if you think it’s trivial, or if you assume it’s already answered somewhere, and you just don’t know where to look. Often, small questions or contributions lead us to discover problems in our process, gaps in our knowledge or simple steps that improve our products and the whole team’s workflow that would easily have remain unnoticed. Be open and challenge everything. Author Dilyan Genov Employee
Share: Cloud engineeringJune 03, 2022 Tech career always starts as a value-laden endeavor. The key to keep your professional growth continuous is a passion for lifelong learning. Which part of IT industry to choose for your tech career path? How to get inspired? With or without partner for your initiatives? The second part of Ivaylo Kenov’s candid interview answers these questions and more. When a person in the profession chooses how to develop, what must he consider – programming language, team, projects, company, other? How much do you think each of these factors weighs? What would be the pros and cons for him personally if he did not choose to start in a product company? I have always said that technology is not so important, as long as a person finds it interesting and likes to work with it. There is potential and opportunities for development in every part of the IT industry. So it’s more a matter of personal preference. The team and the atmosphere The team and the atmosphere are a factor that is extremely important to me. We spend most of our lives at work and it is good to be surrounded by people who make us feel good. A junior programmer should be among the good mentors and colleagues to help him rise quickly just when it’s hardest – at the start. My career developed favorably mainly because of the strong leaders, among whom I found my first job. In regard to the projects – I think that at the beginning of the programmer’s career any project that works in a quality team would be useful, no matter what stage of business development it is. It is important to feel that you are learning new techniques and developing your skills daily or at least weekly. Software engineering is not just about writing code. There are many different processes and skills that we can only develop if we are part of a larger structure. They are as important as technological knowledge, but they are learned through workplace practice. After a few years – then it makes sense to choose the work itself and the various specifics in the projects that one thinks he will like. For companies and whether they are product or project-based – here everyone should judge for themselves, because both have their pros and cons. There is no better choice, but from my experience if you work on a product – you have the opportunity to gain more depth in your knowledge, but they remain niche and specific to that particular business. Frequent changes of projects, on the other hand, lead to less depth in the details, but a greater variety of tasks and skills. Both are worth it in the long run and it is a matter of personal choice in my opinion. 2. How do you choose the topics for the individual sessions? What inspires you in this process? Many of the topics I teach are selected by the audience through a survey, but I select the possible options in it very carefully. I generally follow these guidelines: – I try to make the material as “evergreen” as possible, or in other words to last over time and be relevant to the industry even after years. With the dynamic environment of the technology sector, this is strongly said to be almost impossible, but in the end there are always concepts that are abstract and teach you to think correctly, whenever you decide to pay attention to them. For example, my lectures on functional programming or the current series on software architectures may be useful in half a decade. Of course, some of the knowledge will have changed or become obsolete, but the overall picture tends to remain as it is provided at the moment. – I want to address some pressing issues. Those that were difficult for me some time ago or for which I regularly receive questions from my students. Some of the lectures for advanced require a great deal of reading and gathering knowledge from a variety of sources. This is where I come and help with synthesized information and a selected presentation that goes into depth. Such an example is my topic of asynchronous programming or authentication and authorization. Newcomers to the field regularly have ambiguities and “gaps” around these issues, and it can be said that they are an absolute standard and are part of almost all projects in the industry. – Last but not least – topics that the industry is currently seriously interested in. Here we may come across a lecture that is not super relevant over time, because “hypes” are usually associated with newer technologies, and they tend to change quickly. However – once again I try to cover the topic conceptually so that it can remain relevant as long as possible. Examples of such lectures are microservice architectures, containerization with Docker or orchestration with Kubernetes. I observe online conferences and which topics are the most watched, then I catch and unravel them to a serious depth so that I can provide quality training 3. What is useful in having a partner in the realization of such events? Why did you choose INDEAVR? It may be clear to the readers, but preparing the materials takes a considerable amount of time. Days, and sometimes weeks, of my free time, because like most people – I have a standard 8-hour job from morning till evening. The knowledge in the topics goes to such a depth that often during the preparation I also learn details that I missed during my professional experience. As I have already said – according to my observations, some of my lectures are practically free courses. When I started the initiative, I wanted to achieve a balance in which to reward my work properly according to the labor market, but also to spread knowledge to as many people as possible, without harming them based on their financial situation. For this reason, the lectures are free during the live broadcast and a few days after. If you do not have the financial means – you consider your time and study according to my schedule. And if you set aside money for lessons – then you can take the record for a fair amount in my opinion, to watch it as you see fit. The money raised in this way is enough to cover the main costs of taxes, advertising, accounting, administrative work and other operational costs, but not enough to make the initiative financially sustainable mainly through free lectures. Here comes the help of partner companies, through which support of lectures, invest in the education of many people and help develop the industry. I try not to make too much advertising noise, because the goal is to focus on acquiring new knowledge. For this reason, the partners are minimal in number and are carefully selected based on feedback from colleagues in the industry or personal impressions over the years. While talking about partners – I want to specifically thank INDEAVR, because my communication with them has always been very easy and pleasant. So far, the company has not forgotten to be a partner in any event that shows commitment to the industry and beginners in the profession. I am extremely grateful for their contribution, because without them – my lectures might not have existed in the current public and accessible format. Author Dilyan Genov Employee
